EUROPE CEPT – CHILDREN BOOKS
Dear Philatelic friend,

POSTE SRPSKE AD issued new stamps:

EUROPE CEPT – CHILDREN BOOKS  -  on 07.May 2010.
Set consists of 2 stamps. Face values are 1 KM ( 0,51€) and 2 KM (1,02€).
Because of the difficulty in defining children’s literature, it is also difficult to trace its history to a precise starting point.

15th Century
Some stories popular among children were written in the 15th Century. Thomas Malory’s Morte d’Arthur (1486) and the tales of Robin Hood (c. 1450) were not written with children in mind, but children have been fascinated by these stories for centuries.
17th Century
In 1658 Jan Ámos Komenský published the illustrated informational book Orbis Pictus in Czechoslovakia. It is considered to be the first picture book published specifically for children.
18th Century
In 1744, John Newbery published A Little Pretty Pocket-Book in England. He sold it with a ball for boys or a pincushion for girls. It is considered a landmark for the beginning of pleasure reading marketed specifically to children.
19th Century
In the early Nineteenth Century, the Brothers Grimm; Jakob and Wilhem were responsible for the writing down and preserving of oral traditions in Germany such as Snow White, Rapunzel, and Hansel and Gretel. Brothers Grimm also spoke serbian language and some of their fairy tales were taken from serbian language. They were in contact with Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic.
Between 1835 and 1848, Hans Christian Andersen of Denmark published his beloved fairy tales: The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen  and others. His fairy tales have been translated into over 150 languages and continue to be published in millions of copies all over the world and inspired many other works.
The birthday of Hans Christian Andersen April 2nd was chosen to be the International Children`s Book Day, which is celebrated in 70 countries around the world.
Some of the great names of serbian authors are: Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj, Branko Copic, Dusko Radovic, Dragan Lukic, Ljubivoje Rsumović and others.

POSTE SRPSKE AD issued new stamps:

100 YEARS FROM THE BIRTH OF MESA SELIMOVIC - on 26. April 2010. Set consists of 1 stamp. Face value is 1 KM ( 0,51€).

Mehmed Mesa Selimovic was born on April 26th 1910 in Tuzla. In his hometown he finished elementary school and Grammar School. In 1930 he enters in the group Serbian-Croatian Language and Yugoslav Literature of Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. In 1944 he goes to Belgrade and carries out significant political and cultural functions. From 1947 he lives in Sarajevo and works as a professor of Academy of pedagogy, docent of Faculty of Philosophy, art director of “Bosnia Movie”, drama director of the National Theatre and chief editor of Publishing firm “Svjetlost”.
After his first book, collection of relation “First troop” (1950), with the topic from the National Liberation War, he publishes novel “Silence” (1961). After that he publishes “Foreign land” (1962) and short poetic novel “Fog and moonlight” (1965).
“Dervish and Death” (1966) was welcomed by liberal criticism as a remarkable work. Writers from Bosnia and Herzegovina suggested that Mesa should be candidate for Nobel`s prize for literature.
In his book, “Friends”, Dobrica Cosic presents part of testimonial letter of Mesa Selimovic to Serbian Art Academy from 1976. Selimovic writes:
“I come from Muslim family, my nationality is Serbian. I belong to Serbian literature, but literature creativity in Bosnia and Herzegovina I take as native literary center, but not special literature of Serbian-Croatian literary language. I equally respect my origin and my commitment, because I am also connected to anything that identified my personality and my work. Each attempt to separate it, in any case, I would consider misuse of my basic right guaranteed by Statute. Therefore, I belong to the nation and literature of Vuk, Matavulj, Stevan Sremac, Borislav Stankovic, Petar Kocic, Ivo Andric, and my deepest relationship with them I don’t need to prove.”
Novel “Fortress” (1970) was filled with faith in love, which was understood as the bridge that connects people, with no matter to difference in beliefs, civilizations and ideologies.
He died in Jyly 11th 1982 in Belgrade.
